Welcome to Pippin! Although not widely known by the average audience member, Pippin is a favorite amongst musical theatre people everywhere for its difficult music, complicated story-telling, and Fosse-style dancing. It has been an absolute joy to work on such a rewarding show with such gifted and intelligent students. Loosely based on the historical son of King Charlemagne, the story picks up just as Pippin has graduated from University. Narrated by “players” representing the voices of doubt, insecurity, and underlying evil, Pippin is determined to discover his passions, plans, and ultimate purpose in life. This story isn’t an easy one to follow. It is neither linear nor realistic and is set in an alternate universe that represents the Circus of Life! In fact, Pippin was one of the first concept musicals ever written. It explores a theme more than a concrete plot, and in so doing asks the audience to address some of their own demons concerning that theme. What is the meaning of life? How do I define success and happiness? What is my overall purpose and place in this world? I have ultimately found the story of Pippin to be an incredible coming-of-age exploration. This young man sincerely wants to make the most of his time and in so doing almost loses sight of what being happy and fulfilled truly means. May we all take a lesson from his journey today and remind ourselves what it is that makes life worth living.
