Macbeth – Metro State

Welcome to Macbeth! The story you will see tonight is one you may have seen before: a good human overcome with a secret ambition causes the downfall of their friends, their family, and for a time, their country.  How far would you go to make all your dreams come true? To protect your family’s interests? To achieve everything you’ve ever wanted? Tonight’s production will unfold from the perspective of the witches: three individuals who take great pleasure from observing and causing significant pain to the people around them. The weird sisters pray on human insecurities, secret lusts, and universal qualities that boil in each of us exposing the dark complexities within the best of humanity.

Our production tonight is a celebration of our department and our student body. Our story is set in a magical, medieval land that includes all gender identities, colors, and ways of life. It will also have a bit more stage combat than the average play. Over the last 2 years, we have dedicated significant time and resources to training and certifying our students in stage combat. This is the first production at Metro where we are able to show the fruits of those labors. I would like to thank Atlas, Levi, and Gregory for everything they have done both in my journey and that of my students to make that happen.

Whether its your first time seeing this play or your twentieth, I invite you to let the interpretations and perspectives of a new generation of artists breath life and nuance into a story you may know well. We are more like Macbeth than we care to admit, and you will find yourself liking the sisters more than you know you should. The life-long struggle between good and evil within all of us and our inability to silence the whispering voices of doubt, fear, and greed is what truly makes this play the most horrifying of the Shakespearean cannon.
